THE BBC UK RADIO 1 INTERVIEW

"I think our favourites when we're performing live are up-tempo songs that we can dance to... when we're in the studio I find it personally a little easier to sing the ballads." says Brian. "I enjoy those more, for my personality, but 'Shape Of My Heart' is a mixture of both because we're known for our mid-tempos as well." AJ also mentions their new album 'Black and Blue': "One of the biggest differences on this new record is the fact that of the thirteen songs on there... two were written by us as a group, and some different songs were written by Howie, by myself, Nick did a lot of writing on one of the songs that we did as a group - we got more involved in the writing and production side... Each track has it's own individuality, every song does not sound the same." Scott also asks them the thorny question of how long the Backstreet Boys will continue as a band. "I think there will come a time when we will probably go in five different directions but that will not be the end of the Backstreet Boys. We'll probably just have five different things going on, take a little downtime, and come back and do another record" suggests Brian. And though they see themselves branching out in this way as Boyzone have done, they don't see themselves as a boyband - Brian says: "We're not comfortable with that at all. It's a label. It's like a stamp. And we were not fabricated, we were not put together, we were the creators of the hysteria that's going around now, and now there's 20 million groups like us - which is cool - but we don't like the boyband term."
